Some of the most beautiful elopement photos don't come from perfect weather — they come from real moments in real conditions, and Ashley and Jordan's Sunset Cliffs elopement is proof of that. The sky was overcast, the light was soft and moody, and the dramatic cliffs of one of San Diego's most iconic coastal locations made for a gallery that felt cinematic, intimate, and completely unforgettable.
I photographed Ashley and Jordan's elopement through Eloped in SoCal, an elopement company I love working with, and this one was a truly special day from start to finish.
The Details
Ashley's look was absolutely stunning. A beautiful dress paired with the most gorgeous long pearl-trimmed veil that moved so beautifully against the coastal backdrop — it was one of those details that elevates every single photo it appears in. Her bouquet, by the incredibly talented Native Poppy, was the perfect finishing touch — lush, romantic, and perfectly suited to the setting.
Jordan wore a classic black suit, and his detail that completely stole my heart? Custom cufflinks. One read "I love you more" and the other was engraved with Ashley's name and their wedding date. The kind of detail that is small enough to miss but means everything when you find it — and absolutely worth zooming in on in the gallery.
The Ceremony
Ashley and Jordan kept their ceremony simple and intimate — exactly right for Sunset Cliffs. Chairs set out for their 30 guests, an officiant, and the vast Pacific Ocean stretching out behind them. No arch, no elaborate setup — just two people, the people they love most, and one of the most naturally dramatic backdrops in all of San Diego doing all the work.
There is something so powerful about a ceremony at Sunset Cliffs. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks below, the wide open sky overhead, the rugged cliffs framing everything — it makes even the simplest ceremony feel monumental.
The Portraits
After the ceremony we moved into couples portraits and the overcast sky turned out to be an absolute gift. Soft, diffused, even light with no harsh shadows — it is honestly a photographer's dream, even if it doesn't feel that way in the moment. Ashley and Jordan were so relaxed and sweet together, and those portraits reflect every bit of that.
My absolute favorite images from the day are the ones where we incorporated Ashley's pearl veil.
Why Sunset Cliffs is a Dream Elopement Location
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is one of the most dramatic and naturally beautiful elopement locations in all of San Diego, and it requires no decoration to look stunning — the location does everything for you. A few things to know if you're considering it:
The light is beautiful at any time of day. Golden hour and sunset are obviously stunning here, but as Ashley and Jordan proved, an overcast sky creates its own kind of magic. Don't let a cloudy forecast ruin your excitement — it might just make your photos even more moody and memorable.
Keep your setup simple. The natural drama of Sunset Cliffs is the star — you don't need an arch or elaborate florals to make it feel special. A beautiful bouquet, meaningful details, and the right people around you is all you need.
Plan for the wind. The coastal breeze at Sunset Cliffs is real, especially closer to sunset. For veils, florals, and hair — embrace it rather than fight it. Some of the most beautiful and dynamic photos come from that movement.
Check permit requirements. Depending on the size of your gathering and setup, you may need a permit for events at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Always worth confirming in advance so your day runs smoothly.
Parking can be limited. Street parking along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard fills up quickly especially on weekends. Give your guests a heads up and build in extra time for everyone to arrive and get settled.
