A Coronado Family Session — Ice Cream, Birthday Celebrations, and Coronado Beach

Some family sessions follow a traditional formula — show up, find a pretty spot, take some photos. And then there are sessions like Jessica and Steven's that throw the formula out entirely and replace it with ice cream, a surprise birthday cinnamon roll, and the most genuine and joyful family energy I have had the pleasure of photographing.

A special note before we dive in — this is actually the third time I have had the honor of photographing this family. I captured Jessica's maternity session a couple of years ago, their family session last year, and now this one. Watching a family grow through photos over the years is one of the most meaningful parts of this job.

Starting at Sundaes at the Del

We kicked off the session at Sundaes at the Del, the sweetest little ice cream shop at the Hotel Del Coronado. Just a family enjoying their ice cream together while I captured every real and candid moment.

After the ice cream shop we took a moment to celebrate something very special — Kodah turning two. Jessica had brought a little cinnamon roll with a number two candle on top, and the whole family gathered around to sing happy birthday. These are the kinds of in between moments that end up being the most treasured photos in a family gallery.

Heading Down to Coronado Beach

Coronado Beach in the late afternoon has such a warm and soft quality of light that makes every photo feel relaxed and timeless. Ollie and Kodah were absolute naturals, and Jessica and Steven's easy, relaxed energy made the whole session feel effortless from start to finish.

Why I Love Multi-Location Family Sessions

Starting somewhere fun and personal before heading to a beautiful outdoor location is one of my favorite ways to structure a family session. The first location loosens everyone up — especially kids — so by the time you get to the beach the whole family is relaxed, laughing, and completely comfortable. If you are thinking about incorporating a meaningful location into your session — a favorite coffee shop, ice cream spot, or park — I am absolutely here for it. Those personal touches are what make a family gallery feel like yours and nobody else's.
