Coronado Beach Maternity Session
There is something truly magical about a maternity session on Coronado Beach at golden hour. The soft warm light, the sound of the waves, the expansive stretch of sand — it is one of the most beautiful and timeless settings in all of San Diego for expecting parents to celebrate this incredible season of life. Tara and Jonathan’s session here was one of those evenings I will always remember — sweet, fun, and completely full of love for their little boy on the way.
And a special note before we dive in — Tara found me through a referral from another couple I've had the pleasure of photographing. There is truly no greater compliment in this business and it means the world every single time it happens.
Starting in the Dunes
We kicked off the session in the Coronado Beach dunes, and it is honestly one of my favorite spots in San Diego for maternity portraits. The natural textures of the sand and beach grass create such a beautiful and organic backdrop that feels timeless without being distracting. The golden hour light filtering through made everything feel warm and dreamy.
Tara's first outfit was absolutely perfect for the setting — a flowy skirt and top with the top tucked up to show off her beautiful belly. It moved beautifully in the coastal breeze and photographed like a dream. We captured a mix of romantic posed portraits and candid moments between Tara and her husband, and what struck me immediately was just how natural they both were in front of the camera. No stiffness, no awkwardness — just two people genuinely in love and excited about their growing family.
One of my favorite things about this session was watching Tara's husband with her. He was so attentive and supportive throughout — constantly checking in to make sure she was comfortable and feeling good. Those quiet moments of care between them made for some of the most genuine and tender images of the entire session.
Moving Down to the Water
For the second half of the session we moved down to the water's edge, and the change of scenery gave the gallery a completely different feel. The wet sand, the waves rolling in, and that open horizon behind them added a sense of scale and drama that balanced beautifully with the more intimate dune portraits.
Tara changed into her second outfit for this part of the session — jeans and a long sleeve button down shirt with just two buttons done to keep that beautiful belly on display. It was such a great wardrobe choice — relaxed, casual, and completely them. The contrast between the two outfits means their gallery has real variety, from romantic and ethereal in the dunes to fun and effortless at the water.
The candid moments at the water were some of my absolute favorites — laughing together, watching the waves, just being present with each other in this incredibly special season of their lives. They were genuinely one of the most natural and enjoyable couples I have worked with, and it showed in every single frame.
Why Coronado Beach is Perfect for Maternity Sessions
Coronado Beach consistently ranks as one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire country, and it is easy to see why it makes such a stunning backdrop for maternity photography. The wide open stretch of sand gives you so much room to work with, the dunes add natural texture and variety, and the golden hour light along this stretch of coastline is absolutely unmatched in San Diego.
If you are expecting and considering Coronado Beach for your maternity session, a few tips:
Golden hour is everything. Plan your session to start about an hour before sunset. You will get the warmest, most flattering light of the day and the beach tends to be less crowded as the evening winds down.
Bring two outfits. Just like Tara did — one flowy and romantic for the dunes, one casual and relaxed for the water. Two outfits gives your gallery real variety and makes the whole session feel like two different shoots in one.
Wear something that shows your belly. You are celebrating this season — don't hide it! Whether it's a flowy dress, a tucked top, or an open button down, showing off that bump is always something my clients are glad they did when they see their photos.
Wear shoes you can take off. The dunes and the water both feel so much more natural barefoot, and sand in your shoes is never fun.
