A La Jolla Elopement at the Wedding Bowl

If you're dreaming of eloping in San Diego with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop, the Wedding Bowl in La Jolla should be at the very top of your list. Tucked along the stunning La Jolla coastline, this natural amphitheater carved into the cliffs is one of the most breathtaking and sought-after elopement spots in all of Southern California. Opal and Brian's intimate celebration here was the kind of day that reminds me exactly why I love elopement photography — real, unscripted, and completely full of love.

A Quick First Look and Private Vows

Before their guests arrived Opal and Brian shared a quick first look — that private moment of seeing each other for the first time before the ceremony. They also exchanged private vows with just their officiant present, which gave them a quiet, intimate space to say the words that really mattered before stepping into the celebration with their guests. It's one of my favorite ways for couples to structure an elopement day — you get the best of both worlds, the privacy of an intimate moment and the joy of celebrating with the people you love most.

An Intimate Ceremony in Front of Their Guests

With around 20 guests gathered at the Wedding Bowl, Opal and Brian had the most perfect intimate ceremony. Small enough to feel personal and close, just large enough to feel like a real celebration. The Wedding Bowl's natural cliffside setting means your guests are right there with you, surrounded by the sound of the ocean — there is truly no venue that can replicate that feeling.

Couples Portraits at the Cliffside

After the ceremony we slipped away for couples portraits and the Wedding Bowl did not disappoint. There are so many beautiful spots to work with on the surrounding grounds, but my personal favorite is a nearby cliffside area with an unobstructed view of the water. The combination of the rugged coastline, the deep blue Pacific, and that bright Southern California sky makes for some of the most dramatic and romantic portraits I have ever captured. Opal and Brian were completely relaxed and in their element, and it showed in every single frame.

Everything You Need to Know About Eloping at the Wedding Bowl

If you're considering the Wedding Bowl for your elopement or intimate wedding, here are a few practical things to know going in:

You need a permit. Any event at the Wedding Bowl requires a permit from the City of La Jolla. Make sure this is sorted well in advance — your elopement company or coordinator can usually help facilitate this.

Parking is street parking only. There is no dedicated lot so plan accordingly, especially if you have guests joining you. Give everyone a heads up so nobody is stressed trying to find a spot right before your ceremony.

Weekdays are always better. La Jolla is a popular destination and the Wedding Bowl draws a crowd on weekends. If your date is flexible, a weekday elopement means a quieter, more intimate experience with far fewer onlookers. The light mid to late day can be beautiful too — not quite golden hour but still stunning along the coast.

Timing matters. The sun can still be fairly high in the sky in the mid to late afternoon, so work with your photographer on positioning to make the most of the available light. A good elopement photographer will know exactly how to work with whatever the sky gives you.

Why I Love Shooting Elopements at the Wedding Bowl

The variety of photo opportunities at this location is genuinely hard to beat. From the natural amphitheater of the bowl itself to the cliffside overlooks and the rugged coastline, you never run out of options.

If you're planning a La Jolla elopement or an intimate wedding anywhere in San Diego, I would absolutely recommend the Wedding Bowl.
